Police officer's heart break at being told his dog must be sold at auction

When a police dog handler decided it was time to retire after 34 years of service he assumed his four-legged partner, Ajax, would retire with him.

Then when Matt Hickey of Ohio was told he would have to buy the dog, he offered the police department $3500 – the dog's independently assessed value.

That's really mean. Poor dog and poor policeman. Hope nobody bids against him and they can retire together.

How awful I would have thought that the handler would get first choice since they've built up a relationship.

That's terrible. I guess Ajax is just being auctioned off like an "asset"

Good luck Mr Policeman

It's very sad.

But on the other hand the police department will need to find a suitable replacent. What is the cost of a fully trained, experienced police dog? If I were a local tax payer, I'd be torn between what feels morally right and what might increase my taxes.

I thought Ohio was quite a big city so the cost of a new dog would hardly make a difference to the Police budget, and he has offered $3,500 so it all seems a bit miserly of the Police Dept.

I hope there is a happy ending to this story.

Ohio is a state, so its state law rather than the city. A fund has been set up to buy the dog for his ex handler and stood at $35000 last week.
In the end, the city relented and allowed Mr Hickey to buy the dog for $1. So a happy ending for all. The remainder of the fund was to be used to purchase better protective vests for serving officers and dogs.

A great resolution. I hope they both have a long and happy retirement.
