A dog welfare organisation based in Cornwall wants dog education to be added to the school curriculum to address breed “ignorance”; citing this as a reason for the increasing numbers of dogs in need of its help.
The registered charity, K9 Crusaders, said it has seen a big increase in the numbers of bull breeds in need of rescue; these types of dogs making up a third of the dogs on its waiting list. It feels that people are unaware of the needs of different breeds and that this should be addressed at school.
The Department for Education thinks otherwise and wants a slimmed down curriculum that contains the essential knowledge which all children should learn, giving teachers more freedom to use their professional judgement when choosing other subjects to include at school.
