Shelter dogs given makeovers to find new home

Dogs in shelters are being given professional makeovers to make them more appealing to prospective owners.

Pet groomers are being called in by rescue centres to clean and “style” stray animals whose scruffy appearance are making them “unhomeable”. In some cases dogs are being given a “teddy bear cut” to increase their appeal.

Experts say the makeovers can improve the behaviour of dogs brought into shelters in poor physical condition, as well as turning them into an “instant hit” with families in search of new pets.

Wood Green rescue centre in Godmanchester, Cambs, said it had been carrying out professional grooming on dogs for 18 months amid a rise in the number of animals being brought in with their coats dirty and overgrown.

I love the "before and after" photos and do hope that by these makeovers more dogs find their forever homes.

They probably also feel a lot better without their matted coats! The fact that it improves behaviour shows how much it can affect a dog, not being looked after properly and having their coat overgrown. Well done to them for volunteering!

Excellent idea, we adopted Sophie "As Is". It was a large urban shelter and she looked and smelled like she had slept in a dumpster. You're not supposed to bathe them immediately after spaying but we had to. The first place she went was the bathtub.
Callie at least they had bathed and cleared up some wounds on his face and shoulders. Certainly bathing a dog and maybe a colorful collar makes them more approachable for adoptive families.

My groomer does this for rescue charities in my area, too. It doesn't just make the dogs more appealing and comfortable, it helps to discover any problems the dog might have, both physical and psychological.
