The Ukrainian government has been accused of offering Ł35 per dead dog before the 2012 UEFA football championship. PETA (People for the ethical treatment of animals) said the cull was going ahead despite promises not to.
Mimi Bekhechi, a manager at PETA in the UK said "In an apparent effort to present the world with a glamorous image of its country during the tournament, thousands of animals are being slaughtered by order of the Ukrainian authorities," "These mass killings are directly related to Ukraine's hosting the Euro 2012 tournament."
The bounty was introduced to encourage the cleanup of street dogs before Ukraine and neighbouring Poland host the 16 matches.
