A Staffordshire bull terrier, abandoned and found trapped inside a storm drain in Barry, Wales, has spent a happy Christmas with her new family in her new forever home.

Izzy was discovered inside the drain after residents heard her distressed cries. A crow bar had to be used to free her and vets subsequently discovered that her jaw was broken in two places. They said this could only have come about as a result of considerable force.

The Evans family, also from Barry, read about Izzy in the paper and mother-of-two Beverley found herself under relentless pressure from her son, Josh, to give Izzy a home.

“My son cried for two days after he found out what happened to her, so we had to have her, “ said Beverley Evans. “He would come home very day and ask me to phone, to see how she was.”

Speaking fondly of Izzy, Beverley said she had never come across a dog like her before and that despite her trauma, Izzy's “sunny disposition” remained intact. She said that Izzy likes to give her paw all the time and is very loving.

Izzy may need an operation to repair her broken jaw in a month or so and is eating liquidised food. The people of Barry have been moved by Izzy's story and have been donating blankets and money to help pay vet bills.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council would like to hear from anyone with any information on how Izzy came to be in the drain.
