A Japanese collaboration has resulted in the creation of a robot-dog. The mechanical dog was developed by NSK with the University of Electro-communications, Tokyo, using technology from Microsoft Kinect.
The robot moves about on four wheels and uses 3D sensing cameras to measure the height and width of stairs, navigating its way up by using its front paws to pull itself onto the next step, with its 'handler' following behind holding an adjustable handle. The robot-dog can be controlled through touch-sensitive hand grips, working alongside pre-programmed software.
