Routine operation left dog with burns

A two-year-old dog who was taken to a veterinary practice to be spayed was left “terribly scarred” after suffering burns to her back. Lucy's owners told a newspaper that The Melbourne Veterinary Centre in Staffordshire accepted responsibility and their insurers reimbursed the money the couple spent on treatment.

Owners Nicola and Darren Fellows said they noticed problems after bringing Lucy home.

Nicola said: “The burn wasn't immediately obvious. We became concerned because she couldn't bear for us to touch her back and would just collapse.

“The vet told us it was a normal reaction after surgery. We were to-ing and fro-ing to the practice for two or three weeks but all they could say was that she had had a reaction to the injection. Eventually her fur started falling out and we could see wheals.”

The vets advised that Lucy be taken to a specialist hospital in Merseyside, where she spent a week before returning home because she wasn't eating; Nicola and Darren said they had to take two weeks off work.

The couple said they were reimbursed the Ł2100 they spent on treatment.

Nicola said: “Even now, Lucy is terribly scarred. We haven't asked for compensation, we just wanted our money back.”

The veterinary practice did not comment.

I saw this on the news, what that poor dog must of gone through she must of been so sore. They seem to think it was caused by a heat bag that was used after her operation when in recovery.....it must of been over heated

That poor dog. Burns, even minor ones are so sore.

It's disgusting that the veterinary surgery have made no comment. have they even apologised? I'd be after compensation and would put them out of business. No way would someone hurt my dog and "get away" with it.

I hope she recovers quickly and there are no lingering after effects.

Poor poor dog. This should never happen, but unfortunately I have heard of it before. A dear friend of mine had one of her Red Setters spayed, and she ended up with a burn the size of a dinner plate on her side. The skin ended up like a piece of old leather and never fully recovered.........in this case, the vet denied all responsibility.

Dreadful.

I had the same problem when I got my cat spayed a few years ago, I througt she had a abess on the oppised side of the scar and said that if the vet had gone in on her left side they would have seen it. My vet was great abount it never never charge me a penny for any of her treament or the tests they sent away to the lab, there was No sign of any abess as the size of the 'burn' was VERY large.Turn out she was one of a very few animals that had a major reaction to the surgal wash they use to cleanse the op area and some went through her fur on to her left side which was not seen or felt wet. It took a long time to heal as I was washing it 3 time a day. All her fur has grown back but she has a 4in white line down her side.
