A six-month-old German shepherd puppy called Fred has been given the go-ahead to train as a police dog, despite having been diagnosed with hip dysplasia at an early age. Fred was given hydrotherapy sessions and the treatment has been so successful that he has built up enough mobility and strength to pass his assessment.
Fred will undergo a 13 week training course in January 2012 as part of the Devon and Cornwall Police puppy scheme. At 8 weeks old, puppies on the scheme are placed with volunteers for 12 months before starting their training. Food and veterinary treatment are paid for by the police.
Devon and Cornwall Police say that the scheme has been so successful they are looking for more volunteers.
