A hero dog jumped into a fast-flowing river after his owner tripped and fell into the ice-cold water.

Brave Staffie Corbin hauled dad-to-be Philip Skirving out of the the River Leven in Alexandria by the scruff of his jumper, reports the Daily Record.

Philip, 27, said: “If he wasn’t there to help me, I would have drowned.

He was walking Corbin at night on a cycle path on the banks of the river near Dumbarton.

He said: “I walk down there with him nearly every night and I just don’t know what happened.

“I took my eyes off where I was walking for just a second and I tripped and went straight in the water.

“I was about 5ft away from the bank but I just went into shock as soon as I hit the water.

"I couldn’t breathe because it was so cold and I just couldn’t get myself back to the bank.

"Corbin jumped right in after me and helped me get out.

“He started to pull on my jumper to try and get me out of the water and I think if he wasn’t there to help me I would have drowned.”

Back on dry land, the pair made their way home to Philip’s partner Zoe.

Philip told our sister paper the Lennox Herald: “Zoe got such a fright when I walked in the door soaked from head to toe.

“We all got such a fright because we are expecting a baby in a few weeks and I could have died.

“We did have a laugh about it the next day. I think I’ll just walk him to the end of the street from now on.”
