Hounds for Heroes new recruits

Hounds for Heroes has recruited six pedigree puppies. The organisation, set up last year by former naval Chief Petty Officer Allen Parton, trains dogs to become assistance dogs for injured and disabled men and women from the armed forces and emergency forces. Mr Parton spent five years in hospital with memory loss and partial paralysis after a crash in the Gulf War in 1991, and has told how a dog coming into his life, labrador Endal, changed everything for him.

Each puppy spends 14 months in basic training, cared for by a volunteer 'puppy parent', before moving on to more intensive classes and a new owner.

Allen Parton recently received Ł7000 from money raised selling charity wristbands with the 2011 Bournemouth Air Festival brochure. One of the trainee puppies, a little golden retriever, has been named Red 4 in honour of Red Arrows pilot Flt Lt Jon Egging, who was tragically killed after a display at the August festival.
