We’ve all been there; call it a craving or the ‘Friday Feeling’ but sometimes we fancy something other than the usual cheese sarnie for lunch.
It seems that so did Daisy, a miniature wire-haired dachshund from Suffolk. Not content with the usual sticks or dead fish that usually satisfied her on beach walks, she found herself a nice bone instead. But this wasn’t any old bone – Daisy found a fossilised mammoth bone believed to be up to two million years old.
The 13 inch, 8 lb bone was found sticking up out of the sand, halfway between the high tide and low water mark and is believed to be a thigh section from a Southern Elephant. This type of mammoth, once common to the area, could grow up to 14 feet high and weighed in at a hefty 16 tons.
The bone was too big for Daisy to pick up so she stood and studied it until her owner came along. The Chairman of the local geology group who identified the bone commented that the bone would have been a tastier find a couple of million years ago anyway.
What a bounty for a dog; but Daisy will have to make do with her usual Sunday lamb bone.
