I have had faulty and migrating chips, but never had a reaction to them. There cannot be any doubt that the benefits of chipping far outweigh the disadvantages, and Richard Allport has left it a bit late to start putting doubt in the mind of the public.
Actually, I am amazed that 86% of all dogs are believed to be already microchipped. Just a guess?

Who the hell is Richard Allport ???
I get heartily sick of these egotisical media 'trendies' writing rubbish for the gullible readers. Does anyone remember that Guardian food writer doing a half page spread on why he hated dogs, that was the end of humanity for me ! You have to be a special person to get my support nowadays.

He is quite a well known traditional and homeopathic vet, but definitely favours the latter. I think he is London based, and as you suggest, he is a media luvvie.

Never had problems with chips 6 animals so far. 3 of them toy breeds, done as puppies.

[a social network] seems to be very effective way of finding the owner than the chip as quite a few not registered/not contactable or keeper changed.

Dogs Today a specialist magazine??? Wow! I'd like to know what a magazine for pet dog owners is like then....

I've always had all my puppies chipped before they go to their new homes and never heard of any problems at all. I read that article actually, and my first thought was that here's a little loophole to use as an excuse as to why a breeder hasn't chipped the puppies as per the new laws, and as usual some gullible idiots will fall for it.

Thanks for the update, I genuinely had never heard of him. 'Media luvvie' yes I quite like that Sadly the world we live in now requires some outrageous statement in order to get publicity which in turn delivers readers and thus money.

Morality doesn't come into it. Just get Joe Publics attention any way you can and you're rich

My dog, Willow the Welshie, has a reaction to her chip. There is a solid purplish lump surrounding the chip which sticks up a bit from the skin. Even so, it's causing no pain or discomfort. Our vet said it's the first reaction he's seen out of all the animals he's treated, and probably a side effect of her existing immune problems. We still haven't decided whether to take it out.

The point is, the loophole is there already, if you can get a vet to sign the medical certificate, you're not even skirting the law. Hey presto - totally legal unchipped dogs.

Let me be clear, I support the chip, my other 2 (and cat) are chipped. For Willow, its a case of balancing the chip benefits versus the possibility of the reaction turning malignant. Still undecided.
