This is quite dreadful. I wonder how "mentally ill" she is, as she was considered "fit to plead"?

Well spotted, I'd missed that she has a child on first reading; I would definitely fear for the child's safety if the mother is hearing voices telling her to do things like this.

The whole thing is so very sad.
