Clover the Border Terrier

Border terrier breed standard
General Appearance
Essentially a working terrier.

Characteristics
Capable of following a horse, combining activity with gameness.

Temperament
Active and game as previously stated.

Head and Skull
Head like that of an otter moderately broad in skull, with short strong muzzle. Black nose preferable, liver- or flesh-coloured one not a serious fault.

Eyes
Dark with a keen expression.

Ears
Small, V-shaped; of moderate thickness, and dropping forward close to the cheek.

Mouth
Scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws. Level bite acceptable. Undershot or overshot a major fault and highly undesirable.

Neck
Of moderate length.

Forequarters
Forelegs straight, not too heavy in bone.

Body
Deep, narrow, fairly long. Ribs carried well back, but not oversprung, as a terrier should be capable of being spanned by both hands behind the shoulder. Loins strong.

Hindquarters
Racy.

Feet
Small with thick pads.

Tail
Moderately short; fairly thick at base, then tapering. Set high, carried gaily, but not curled over back.

Gait/Movement
Has the soundness to follow a horse.

Coat
Harsh and dense; with close undercoat. Skin must be thick.

Colour
Red, wheaten, grizzle and tan, or blue and tan.

Size
Weight: dogs: 6-7 kgs (13-151/2 lbs); bitches: 5-6.5 kgs (111/2 -14 lbs).

Faults
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree, its effect on the terrier's ability to work, and the health and welfare of the dog.

Note
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

Only just seen this!!!

On the picture, she looks to be a nicely balanced bitch. I like her head, perhaps a bit deep in stop for me, but nice all the same. Like her hind angulation, but for me her tail is too long. Would prefer slightly smaller ears. Very good topline and tail set.

Overall presents a very pleasing picture, I wish you the very best of luck with her Leema.

Thank-you very much for your comments. They have given me some hope for her yet. She has not done well conformation-wise, but with limited showing.

It's interesting that border pop, you think her head looks ottery in number 6 - this is probably one of my least favourite pictures of her, as it shows how much stop she has. I completely agree with you, borderdawn, about too much stop.

Her tail is probably not too long, just very badly groomed. But thanks for pointing it out to me and I will endeavour to groom it better
The 5th photo, I think, was taken after Ronnie Irving told me to take more out of it! So that would be more representative in size... But that picture is a funny one and I don't think it shows it.

I am having trouble with the standard and ears. I can agree that she does have slightly large ears. But what does it mean 'close to the cheek' - where is the cheek? Where is it supposed to be close to?

Also, I've seen some 'small' ears have a crease in them... Is this incorrect?

I'm surprised you guys didn't comment on her ears breaking above the level of her skull. She is one of the few borders in these parts that uses her ears in the ring! And then her ears break above her skull.

Something I also don't like about her is her underline, which is a bit too tucked up for my liking... But I don't know if that is just me.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to turn this into a discussion! But I really thank you both for your lovely comments.

I dont dislike her earset Leema, its a little high for some but there are plenty like it here, I dont class it as a fault nor does it distract for me.

Ears are funny things, I agree some have a crease in them, my Breeze does, close to the cheek means they hang close to the side of the cheek/face, some have "handle bar" ears which stick out which is wrong.

Underline also isnt a problem for me and she is immature yet, they should appear racey, for me, she does.

Number 6 is my favourite pic of her head too. I would imagine some judges may think she has a strong head, but to me she still looks feminine.

Dawn.

I agree that she does have slightly too much stop, but other wise to my eyes, she has a cracking head that says 'border terrier'. Everyone has their own opinions but i still wouldn't mind her coming to live with me

Ah, thank-you! I understand completely.

I might have to her #6 head shot up somewhere... I only put it up because to give you something to strongly critique.

Thanks for the additional comments too, ink.
