Why do dogs circle before pooing or settling down to sleep?

Hi, i just have to ask! Why do dogs circle before lying down, or indeed when they are about to poo? I find this really funny to watch, especially lucky as sometimes he spins so fast he falls over! lol Any people know?

I read it was instinctual, dogs in the wild did it to flatten the tall grasses and make a place to sleep etc. Made sense, but have no idea if it is the true reason.

I think they do it before they poo to make sure they aint gona be ambushed mid poo they would be kinda buggad if they got jumped mid poo,,,,so vunerable, so the turning round is a way of checking for potential muggers all round about em

I never noticed Skye do that - Stumpy does it too - well not so much cocking it out, just lifting one off the ground
