ooh... it depends on what you're looking for really!

Males are more laid back generally - but they are larger and can have a slightly stronger smell (I don't find this myself, but some people mention it) Also they can go through hormonal phases, though, touch wood, this has never happened to me yet with any of my rats.

Females are a lot more active, and although affectionate most won't sit still for ages to be cuddled. That said, most of mine do like to sit and cuddle. They can be a bit fast if there are young children handling them as well - i would usually advise boys for young children. Girls are more prone to mammary tumours as well remember.
