are cats allowed to be sold in pet shops?

today i found out one of my friends had bought a kitten from a petshop - it had ringworm, fleas etc- a right state

i went after colllege and asked if they had anymore as for 15 quid id have bought one cos i know i can give it a better home n life (poor thing)


but - i thought it was against the law to sell kittens and puppies in petshops???

they said they arnt getting anymore in tomorow but im going back anyhow to see.

As far as im aware its against the law, contact the RSPCA and trading standards asap...thats just terrible

Thats sad , i wasnt aware of that, but you could try speaking to the pet shop, about how you feel about it and i would still check the law out on this one .

It is NOT against the law.
But ALL animals sold must be in good health, and kept in adequate housing.

I sell kittens if people bring litters in - I would rather take them in than see them dumped.

I health check them all, treat them for worms and fleas, they also have a week in isolation before they are sold, to ensure nothing is wrong with them.

I also get the name and address of every person I sell an animal to, and if I don't like the look of them, they don't get an animal - simple!

Our local pet shop sells kittens but they always look in pretty good condition, they take the name and address of new owners (although nothing to stop you giving a false one) they charge £120 + for their kittens!

the kittens in question had ringworm, fleas and look awful

i went yesterday to see if there was anymore but no there wasnt - i hope they all went to nice homes though

were going to the pet shop regular to check if anymore come in

its interesting, this question. i have noticed in the last few years a rumour gone around that there was a new law that pet shops couldnt sell live pets anymore. i hear this in conversation often, across many forums too.
i wonder how/where this rumour came about.

would be nice if it was true though
