Labrador rescues man
Dog hailed hero over fells rescue
A dog has been hailed as a hero after he led rescuers to a missing 74-year-old man two days after he got lost while walking in mountains.
Mark Corrie, from Greenhill, Cumbria, set off on Saturday morning to walk his daughter's Labrador Boz but failed to return home.
As bad weather closed in, he sheltered in a dip in the ground while Boz stood barking on a ridge on Cumrew Fell.
A major search operation was set up and the pair were found on Monday.
Boz is a hero. He is enjoying all the attention - and getting lots of treats
It is thought Mr Corrie may have become disorientated in bad weather and he strayed off a path and got lost.
The search on Saturday involved 45 volunteers from mountain rescue teams across the north of England.
On Sunday, 97 people took part in the search including police underwater search teams, dog search teams and a helicopter from RAF Boulmer using heat-seeking thermal imaging cameras.
The pair were found on Monday after Boz was heard howling by searchers.
Mr Corrie's wife Pat said: "I am so relieved. Boz is great. A friend from the village heard the dog barking on the ridge. Howling she said it was.
"She decided it was in distress so she and her husband went to look. The dog ran to them, then ran away and took them to Mark.
"Boz is a hero. He is enjoying all the attention - and getting lots of treats."
Mr Corrie, who was rescued on his 74th birthday, was suffering from dehydration and was taken off the fell on a stretcher.
He was airlifted to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
