At what age did you 'take them off lead?'

Just a general query really...

i officially took indie off lead at around 10 months old.
i did try once at 5 months, but she ran off and it scared the hell out of me. so i kept her on a long line and did loads of recall training, then took her fave toy out and let her off and shes been fine since

I think with Toby it was after he was about 1 year. This was mainly because he was too friendly with people and would go wandering off with them as though he had known them forever

Even now if we are out and he has a play about with another dog. he's not satisfied till he has said hello to the owner of the dog

we let them off as soon as they're old enough to go out on walks - train a recall from day one. If they develop a problem they'd go back on lead but we've not had a huge problem

I've clicked the lowest age but actually it isn't low enough. From the first day she was allowed out after her vaccs 11 weeks. The Same with Sydney. Practice recall in the garden and in the house beforehand and from day one her recall has been 100%. Also young puppies at that age tend to stick like glue and never venture very far. Couple of weeks later could be a different story.

Mine have always been walked off the lead They're all really good about coming back when they're called and we've never had any problems.

Hmm i think i'm just too scared then. Her recall is very good, unless there is a noise or leaf that is distracting her. In my sisters garden she is off lead. But she will only come 4/5 times. so i wouldn't really call that 100%?

I also had Loki of lead practically as soon as he was old enough to go out, had practiced recall from day one and took him out couple of times on a long lead and he never tried got to the end of the lead much and at that age was practically glued to my ankles all the time so tried him on the beach right next to the sea as hes scared of the sea so knew he wouldnt go that way and it made us a long way away for the car park and everyone else on the beach, I was petrified but he was brilliant! I geared myself up with lots of his fav treats to make sure I was more exciting then anything else around!

As soon as she was old enough to go for walks. Went to the park - big open space.

I think the younger the better, get them started on recall then - as they're not going too far when they're a baby.
