Advice on my dog please. Ticks? Fleas?

Hello,
My dog within the past week has been getting "welts" or scabs.
Im not sure what this is from? Is it from him biting or licking himself too much? Ticks or fleas?

I went to pet smart to see what they suggest, as I don't have enough money at the moment for a vet visit. The man at pet smart said that my dog had ticks or feas and suggested that I shave his hair short as possible and suggested some tick/flea shampoo. I used it for the first time two days ago. The instructions on the bottle stated to use once a week, and shampoo should become effective after one to two days after dog was shampooed. I also put benzoyl peroxide on all of his scabs.

I have noticed one or two more new/fresh scabs.
Why is this happening and how can I stop this??
This has just randomly occurred within in the past week.

All advice is appreciated.
Thank you

I really think you should see a vet. Probably needs antibiotics to clear infection.

Beautiful looking dog, shame he had to be shaved.
I don't know what the problem is either but agree with Brenda, he should really see a vet.
I believe oatmeal shampoo is very soothing for the skin.. Hope he is better soon.

Did you use human benzoyl peroxide ? or the animal version?

Human version is too strong for dogs from what i gather. BP is used as an acne treament for the most part. are you trying to remove the scabs? is the dog itching?

Cant see the pics on this computer but will have a look when i get home. Poor thing having its chowness clipped off

I would definitely at least call the vet for advice. Once you clear up the spots I might recommend Frontline. We have a big problem with fleas and deer ticks in our area. Using Frontline from April to September seems to work well.

No idea what your dog has, but it sure doesn't look like any flea or tick problem I've seen. Ticks, you can feel and pull. Fleas . . . run a flea comb through the dog's coat and you'll see them. You should also be able to see flea frass (poop) as tiny dark spots cause your dog has light colored skin.
I see you're in Dallas. You might want to look on Craigslist under Services > Pets. You might find an inexpensive vet. We have a great mobile vet who goes to the local flea market . . . she does vaccines for $20 with no consult fee, and often skips consult fee on other stuff.

Here's a link for the mobile vet I found in Dallas

If you do decide to check CL for a vet, absolutely DEMAND proof of right to practice and also for degrees and LOOK THEM UP before using their services. Lots of scam artists on CL who will both take your money AND harm your pet with illegal veterinary medicine.

As for the scabs... it looks like flea dermatitis or something. You should be able to notice if the dog is scratching a lot. If he is, then it's probably due to fleas. I use Sentry Fiproguard MAX on my big man. It works better than Frontline for me, makes him not itch the area so badly, and costs less than Frontline when bought on Amazon.com. If the PetSmart said fleas, it's probably fleas. A vet consultation won't cost much more than the flea medicine, as flea drops are quite pricey, so it's probably the way to go. Those scabs look raw and are easily infected, if that happens you'll have a much larger problem on your hands. It COULD be ringworm, food or environmental allergies, mange mites, or something else so a vet does need to get to the bottom of it, impossible to diagnose and treat online.
