Ringcraft

I've decided, I'm going to have to go to ringcraft with Takara.

Kady told me to make sure I keep on and try to teach her to 'stand'. Has anyone here ever tried to get a hyper puppy with not a lot of garden to tire herself out in, to stand???

I will ask Kady personally if she doesn't see this, but anyone got any ideas - I don't know where to start I'm afraid.

She's either too tired to train, or too hyper. I can't catch her in between.

We were taught the command stand at puppy classes.

We had to wait until pup was sitting then put a treat in front of their nose and move it away slowly. The pup will stand to try and get the treat. We were using a clicker at the time and we used to click and treat as the pup was in the stand position.

We then added the command "stand".

Not sure if there is an easier way

Thanks Carole will bear that in mind! I didn't realise they'd do that at puppy classes - was it just standing or actually show standing

OK...get some really nice tasty bait.
Stand her on a table that is not slippery or kneel down next to her.
hold the bait in your hand so that most of it is concealled and a little bit is showing.
allow her to nibble the bait and while she does so tell her stand.Kep the bait tucked into your hand and feed it out SLOWLY to keep her interested.
do this for short periods to start off with and build up.
position her feet while she is stood nibbling the bait. When they are right tell her good girl in a clam voice and after a few seconds allow her to have the bait
Thats how I do it anyway!! my dogs are free stood BTW but this teaches the pup what is expected and how to stand square

Nikki what do you mean by "free stood"? Does it mean you don't "man handle" the dog while it's being shown? Just nosey!

And would a chest freezer do in place of a table!

Hi
free stood means we just allow the dog to stand on its own.We don't place feet or hold any part of the dog just stand infront and 'bait' the dog to get its attention.
The other way of standing a dog is to 'stack'.Which is when a handler places the dogs feet in the desired position and then holds its head and tail.
Although free standing LOOKS easy it is much harder to do since the dog has to be trained to more or less position itself inthe correct stance when required.
Yes a freezer will do....or any hard surface. You can train your pup on the floor....just means you have to kneel down and on the floor too
