Lancaster bull mastiff attack suspect in court

A man has appeared before magistrates in Lancaster charged under the recently-amended Dangerous Dogs Act.

Gary Deegan, 49, of Granville Road, Lancaster, is charged with allowing a dog to cause injury in a private place.

A 54-year-old woman suffered a broken arm and severe cuts in the attack by a bull mastiff on 13 May, the same day amendments to the act, allowing tougher penalties, came into effect
.
Under the amended Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, allowing a dog to cause injury can now be punished by up to five years in prison.

Previously, the same charge carried a maximum jail term of two years.

Will his sentence meet the new criteria? Or will it be just another case where the dog loses and the owner gets away with just a slap on the wrist?

Thanks for keeping us updated Malka - I wonder if he will be used as an 'example', and get tougher sentencing because of it...

No idea Azz as I can only post articles that are sent to me. But it appears that this is the first prosecution under the new laws, so it is a matter of wait and see whether he is actually convicted, if so what is the sentence, or whether the new laws do, in fact, actually work or are just another bandaid.
