Take that Insurance for Christmas - Ouch!

Those lovely insurers at M&S have given us a great Christmas present.

Yep Loki's insurance renewal has arrived. I was expecting the premium to be large but it is:

[Drum roll] -

Annual premium £1925.76; £70 excess PLUS 20% of the rest of the cost of veterinary treatment.

And a Happy New Year in 2014.

BIG ouch. Did you file a lot of claims last year? Or perhaps your dog isn't healthy or is elderly?

I had an estimate done on Jade (an 11 year old GSD mix) and the premiums were over $40 per month and that doesn't include illness... only injury and they only covered 70% anyway :/

They were very high because the GSD is known as a very unhealthy breed these days and Jade is above 7 years old. I couldn't bear paying that with no illness coverage...

and I thought Star's was expensive with More Than at just under £100 a month.

Do you spend that much over the year on medication?

That is ridiculous isn't it. I was with M&S originally but when they doubled their premium I went to Argos, then they doubled theirs and I shopped around and eventually settled with Vetsmedicover and it is £27 per month each for Cariad and Lona, Mabs is with someone different, and is £15 per month, and not been able to insure Keshi as yet due to finances, but she will be sorted asap.
I know Loki has epilepsy, but I too am wondering if his meds come to £162 a month.

It is not just the meds though - it is also necessary regular blood tests and, for Loki, emergency treatment when he clusters, but to increase premiums and excess by that much is just diabdoolybolical.

I do not have any insurance for Pereg as there was none at the time and of course she would not be covered by the one or two companies that now offer it.

Linda - I do not know what to say that would be permitted to go through Dogsey's swear filter.

Blooming 'eck How can they warrant that price

Try Direct Line, and shop around to get somebody who will take him on with his problems and a lot cheaper maybe!

I do know all insurance companies will hike up the price after the first year once they've gotcha, so I always ring to say I'm leaving and hey presto, down comes the price to other quotes! Even the AA does this to me, and I tell them I'm going with the RAC.

It's gotta be worth a call Linda surely? You never know, you might get a good result and bring that price right down, I do hope so, it's quite ridiculous isn't it.

He's not going to be covered for existing health problems though is he, and worst of all, this vet that has 'diagnosed' the 'heart murmer' that will now be on his records as well, so another thing for them to refuse to cover.
Thats a lot of money Linda, they have you cornered though don't they.
