Our new puppy

we have had our new pup Dave for nearly 4 weeks he is 4 and a half months old and due to go out for his first walks next week as the vaccinations will then be complete. I keep reading about the 14 week socialisation window and to be honest I'm getting a bit worried about how he will feel (I certainly have no plans to drag him down the road) Up until we collected him he lived with his mum and dad and 6 of his brothers (he was one of 11 pups) the other 4 had been rehomed. Does anybody have any tips as to how it would be successful? I feel for him really because he hasn't met many other dogs since we have had him but has met lots of people and we often sit outside the front of our house and meet lots of other people walking their dogs but it's fleeting..please help? : )

I am sure Dave will be able to go out now - and I look forward to seeing pictures of him!

Are there any puppy parties you can sign up for? Our vets had free puppy socialisation 'parties'. Ours hid under a cabinet for the majority (she's a chi cross so squeezed into a tiny gap!) but the other pups enjoyed themselves! Ours is so social now and loves (most) other dogs and Im sure doing this sort of thing so early on helped - even though she didn't take part much she still watched and learnt!

your dog is beautiful!! I can't take him out now because I have to wait don't I for him to have his second vaccination? and then a week after that~? There aren't any puppy socialisation classes near me I would have to take him on the bus to one, I will post a pic of Dave my friend is going to help me do that, rubbish I know that I don't know how to upload a photo yet! Dave is a gorgeous boy he was very quiet when we first got him but seems very at home and is lying by the fire with a plant pot in his mouth

Hi Katy even if puppies can't go on the floor while waiting for vaccination you can carry them out and about everywhere and anywhere to get used to different sites and sounds.

I would see if you can find a local training class preferably with a trainer who belongs to the APDT list below..

http://www.apdt.co.uk/dog-owners/loc...iners/cornwall

If you give them a ring they will usually be happy for you to sit in on a class without your puppy before committing to join.

The class will give your puppy chance to meet other puppies while starting training.

Thankyou I will check out that website when my daughter has gone to bed...: ) To be honest I'd find it hard to carry Dave he is 14kg already! I wish I had a cart!

We took Lola more or less everywhere we went, in our arms. I took her to the park to meet as many dogs and people as possible. She now goes to a puppy playgroup on a Friday evening. Have you got a puppy park near you? I didn't realise we have one in Brighton, until some kind lady informed me. So ask other dog walkers to see if you have one somewhere.
