There are a lot of things you can buy, but only training will really help you long term.

We have easy walk harnesses here in the states, which I highly recommend. They're great for using to control the pulling, but they won't provide any training.

Good luck! Hopefully with enough daily exercise and training, your dog will get better with the pulling. Use the easy walk harness in the mean time. We also have gentle leaders, they're like a halter used on a horse. I'm not as big of fan of those, as they take some training to get the dog used to wearing them. If you're going to spend the time training a dog to wear a harness of any kind, you mise well just spend the time training the dog to walk nicely on a leash (with a trainer, if you need one).

Hi Paul,

We adopted Mindy at 10 months, and she's quite chunky with a strong pull on a lead.

We bought her one of the harnesses, and it does alleviate some of the pull, the rest is down to training. Some dogs don't like the halti around their mouths, but there are a lot more experienced people on here who will follow with invaluable advice.

Good Luck with your young guy.

Please be very careful about the design of harness you select.

Too many are very badly designed, going over the shoulder joint and upper arm which can lead to inflammation of the joints and muscles.

A well designed harness will leave the whole of the shoulder and upper arm completely clear from obstruction, will not have any metal components than can cause problems and ensure that movement is not impeded.

The following are the type of harnesses you should be looking for. Also avoid any which are constructed of thick, wide material which can mean the muscles retain heat for up to 24 hours.

Please do not use anti pull ones.

Can’t Pull, Won’t Pull Alison Rowbotham

If you use a double ended lead this can help.

Reward him lots when he is in the position you want beside you
Don't walk forwards when he pulls

Takes a while of you beiing consistant cos pulling to get places makes sense to dogs, and it is often rewarded by getting to go forward

Have you looked at harnesses on DogGames site? They are fleece-lined and adjustable. We have two.
