First UK rabies case for a while...

Anything to worry about? I thought it would be only bodily fluids that can pass it on so I'm assuming her cats are safe, although DEFRA I think have been informed because they have to be...there is no way this could be a concern could it?

The traveller from London was diagnosed with the potentially life-threatening disease and is having treatment in hospital after being bitten by a puppy in India nine weeks ago.
. fingers crossed.

From latest reports, unfortunately the prognosis is not very good for her.

No she was bitten by a dog in India. Its only high profile because of what it is.

I am guessing they also have to check to make sure that is really the sorce of the infection

Was under the impression that all the Rabies Vac did was buy you more time to get treated.

Edit: The wrong impression by the looks of it.

Edit: Then again might have been right the ist time

Very sad, but that is the risk one takes when going to a country where rabies is endemic and not taking precautions. Or visiting a doctor some time after having been bitten - I believe that the unfortunate person concerned contraced the illness two months ago but only developed symptoms within the last two weeks.

It has been reported that she had visited her GP and also the A&E at a Dartford hospital twice, but unfortunately she had waited so long before seeking medical treatment that there really is no treatment now.

I live in a Country where rabies is endemic, and where all dogs must have mandatory yearly rabies shots. Unfortunately far too many people do not bother but luckily the incidents of rabies/deaths from rabies in humans is still not that frequent, although even one death is tragic and totally unnecessary.

But the number of times this Moshav, and many like it, are put under quarantine each year, is well into double figures.

That does not mean that there are any rabid dogs around, it just means that there is rabies in the area, usually carried by foxes, and because too many people ignore the mandatory law and do not get their dogs vaccinated, the whole area has to be put under quarantine.

Of course I feel very sorry for the poor woman and her family, but when visiting an area where rabies is endemic, it is only reasonable to take the proper precautions.

I thought from the title that someone had been bitten by a british dog, and contractied it from that. Its unfornate it happened, but gotta say, I'm relieved my first impression from the title was wrong.
