Sometimes, just sometimes, I love my job!

Today I was doing PE with a Y6 class (10/11 year olds) and we were having a game of Quick Rounders which we played indoors. The rules are simple, when the ball is hit the batsman has to run around the 4 bases whilst the fielders have to throw the ball to first base, from first to second base and so on, the aim is that the batsman beats the ball to 4th base. If the ball is dropped it has to be thrown back to 1st base again.

In the class I have a boy that has quite severe learning difficulties as well as significant physical impairments. Remarkably, he managed to hit the ball when it was his turn to bat and he ran like the wind! The ball was quickly catching him so as the ball was thrown from 3rd to 4th base I obstructed the fielder in a pretend attempt to catch the ball myself. Of course I deflected the ball which meant that the (not so little) lad could score a rounder.

As I turned around to offer my apologies to the fielder on 4th base he winked at me and said "Don't worry Miss, I'd have dropped it anyway."

Sometimes children can be cruel, but sometimes they have a heart as big as a horse. I love my job.......................today

That was what I was thinking also

Given the experiences I have had I don't usually praise the modern day youth but as you say there will always be some who stand out from the crowd. Quite a sophisticated reply given that he knew what was going on.
