Dog growled when asked to get off chair

My OH called me in to the lounge to tell me that one of my dogs growled at him when he went to get him off a chair. I found the dog still sitting on the chair and gave the command 'off' of which he did so immediately. I assume this is a dominance thing, so how should I handle this? No problems with my dogs doing what I ask them to do but I need to nip this in the bud and get it right. I've heard of dogs doing this but have never experienced it first hand. My initial thoughts are to stop the dogs getting on the furniture (or just the chair my OH tends to use). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The dog has started to object being told to do something by somebody else as the chair has become valuable to him.

If there is no such behaviour with YOU then you need to ensure that the dog can be removed by anyone else in the house.

Teach your dog the ON and OFF command as a pair, then ensure that your partner can do the same.

If necessary keep a short line on the dog (without a loop) when you are both in so that you can reinforce the fact that failure is not an option.

Did you OH give him the command off? or did he grab his collar or something?

It has nothing to do with dominance. If you do have him on the furniture get your OH to put a long line on him and give the dog the command “off”. Or keep the dog off the furniture all togeter.

OH 'went to get him off the chair'

You gave an instruction

Is that how it happened? In other words, did hubby ask him to off or did he try to physically move him?

Thanks to both of you for the advice.
My dogs are 13 months old and they are definitely a bit 'kevinish' at times. My OH and I have already decided that his chair is out-of-bounds to dogs at all times. No my OH did not give the command 'off' but put his hand behind him and went to pull him off - not a good move!! Having said all that my OH just got out of his chair to get the TV remote and the dog immediately jumped into 'his' chair again - a lovely warm place to lie . I got my OH to give the command 'off' and fortunately he did immediately and lay on the floor looking very baleful. Hopefully the 'growl' earlier this evening was a one off, but new rules are now set in this house!!
Thanks again for the advice.
