Down stay question...?

Ozzie has been doing the down stay part of the KC award for ages ,2 mins plus with me in the room and out ...

For the last 2 sessions he has given up on both times with in the first 10 seconds ,all he does is come and stand beside me he doesn't wander off anywhere or bother the other dogs ,
Any tips on re enforcing the task ???
ps..
While the class moved on to another task i keep him in the down stay away from the group and he was fine...
Thanks in advance Murf...

Does the dog do 5 mins with you beside him?

Does he do 5 mins with you beside him with lots of distractions?

Does he do 5 mins with you out of sight?

Does he do 5 mins out of sight, with lots of distractions?

This is the order in which you train stays.

Also, do you vary the time the dog is left, eg one minute one day, 3 minutes the next, 2 minutes, 4 minutes etc?

Also when you go back to the dog what do you do?

Do you reinforce him whilst he is in the down?

Do you have a set routine eg will he remain there whilst you stand there for one minute?

Whilst you clip on the lead?

Whilst you tug the lead?

How do you release him and what do you do AFTER he has been released (or told to sit, stand whatever)?

Was he lying down with all the dogs around him?

Whatever I would just say to myself that he dosent do it in that place at that time
Practise everywhere
Practice with loads of distractions, chucking toys, walking running then even jumping over your dog
Practise with other dogs around

And in the class in that situation go back to basics. Reward for you taking a step away
Then three
Then two
Then five

Reward for two secs
Then four, then three

Make it fun so he knows exactly what is wanted, and reward lots every time something is different

Nope..

keep him down praise treat and release
Do you reinforce him whilst he is in the down?
Hand command but no eye contact (tips for this would be good)

hmm dogs can be funny, could be anything like something put him off, the floor is cold, another dog was eyeballing him

or he knows he isnt going to get a reward and is going to be there forever (in dog terms)

Whatever the reason you might never find out - I would still just mix it up a whole lot more and make it less predictable

I have tried putting the dog in the stay, walk off, go back to the dog praise but dont release, then walk off again, rinse and repeat.

This is what I did with mine, she used to sit there get bored and start to walk off.

I think she was just bored off stays.

Seems to have worked for me, might work in this situation.

How old is the dog, I have had a hell of a time since mine has gone into teenage mode.
