I know Boxers are , just caught me by surprise when she said....''''I doubt it will be Thyroid but I can test anyway if you want .....but Border Collies are a breed that don't don't usually suffer with thyroid problems''''......... Its just something I have never heard said before, just wondered about the statement and if anyone knew this to be the case

I do know of some BCs with thyroid problems but that might be because they are epis on phenobarbital, as Pb can cause hypothyroidism. Pereg had the full thyroid panel done when she had her last blood tests and her T4 level was very slightly down because of the Pb.

Thanks for that interesting post Malka, I will have to investigate, I know some breeds of dogs are prone to Thyroid but didn't know that BC's are a breed that vets rarely worry about, infact by the way the conversation went I felt that if it wasn't for me asking to have one done, she would not of offered

If you are concerned about potential thyroid problems I would refer you (and the vet) to here:

http://www.hemopet.org/

Parameters of norm in the UK differ to those of US, JD finds more hypothyroid dogs.

At the seminar I attended yesterday on neutering, Nick Thompson said that it is worth using thyroid medication if there is doubt to determine if there is any improvement as it is not a high risk strategy.

Jean has written a great book on this subject

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canine-Thyro.../dp/1617810169

The UK are hosting two seminars with her one in Manchester and the other in Northants on 9/10 April respectively for those interested
