The RSPCA has launched an investigation after a Jack Russell was found strangled having being left tied up to a post at Westlake Park in Pound Lane, Bowers Gifford. The dog was tied up by a rope around its neck with barely any slack, and it is believed the dog became distressed and strangled itself.
The Basildon councillor responsible for animal control, Richard Moore described the incident as an “another appalling example of animal welfare”.
“It was apparent the dog suffered a horrible death and was left in a public park where children were playing during the half term holidays,” he said.
The Jack Russell is one of four dogs to have been found tied in the same spot in the last six months, and all were in poor condition.
Mr Moore referred to a 'Care for your Canine' campaign, which was launched last year after Basildon was identified as having one of the highest figures for stray dogs and animal welfare issues in the country. The campaign strives to get people to “think twice before committing to buying a dog” and promotes proper care for pets.
Anyone with any information on the Jack Russell is urged to call the RSPCA on 0300555999.
