Why not just teach him to find specific things? Once you have attached a NAME to the item, he will be able to disregard other items as the remote will not only have your scent on it but the scent unique to it.

What about smearing a bit of cheese or something on your hands and then putting the scent on the remote - enough so he can smell the cheese but not enough that it gunks up your remote!

I dont know much about scentwork as in dogs finding articles belonging to humans, but if you are ultimately teaching him to find the remote, wouldnt it be the actual scent of the remote he needs to distinguish?

So far i think he is using sight rather than sniffing out the remote so i wanted to add a more unique smell to it to encourage him..
Its been a fun morning ..lol

Teach the dog to fetch the item.
Teach him to fetch it from different locations in view
then hide it in front of him

then hide it in front of him in all sorts of places

Then take dog out of room and ask him to find it in view
Then repeat in different places in view
then hide it

This will generalise and proof the behaviour

I agree that you dont need to make it stinky
I used the same method as SB said to teach mine to scent things
Interestingly my friends dog did not ever sniff for things - as soon as mine couldnt see the object they sniff like steam traing
Griff just charged round looking for it and crying - bless him

Outside to make sniffing out a toy more fun I got some rabbit scent from ebay and they LOVE sniffing out that

Have you decided what the behaviour you want upon location?

Do you want the dog to retrieve it (what if it is non retrievable)?
Bark?
Or point?

The way you choose to reinforce this behaviour, and the natural method of the dog may shape your choice.

I have been giving him his tugtoy when he finds it .
I want him to find it but not pick up...
He has been doing well so far ,i have had to make sure no toys are about as he will get side tracked by them ..

See if he was ball mad you could throw the ball where the remote is, it is how many active search dogs are trained for drugs, money etc.
