Treadmills

I know they have connotations of Pitbull training and Ceaser Milan theories ..
But does anyone have dogs that use one ??

we had one at work for the flat coats. it wasnt used very often, but when she had one that took quite a lot of effort to keep her muscles toned, she went on extra walks and then went on the treadmill too. it was also good for if for some reason or other a dog had put on a couple of pounds. i dont see anything wrong with them providing they are used in the right way.

I think as long as the owner ensures that they are safe for the dog to use there is nothing wrong with them - as long as the dog is actually getting outdoor exercise as well. Jogging on a treadmill minutes may keep a dog fit but walks are for so much more than just keeping a dog fit.

I can see their use for rehab - but for anything else I just dont see the point
Making a super fit bored dog - and bored owners
Walks are far more fun

I would have one if I could justify the expense and had room.

It is just another form of exercise and is a useful tool for fitness training.

Like anything it can be abused, so it should be PART of the exercise regime.

Just like:

On lead walking
Biking/scootering/rig
Tracking
Swimming
Hiking

Just as human athletes work on treadmills and static rowing machines which work certain muscles to improve their performance AS WELL AS running outdoors etc, so can canines use cross training to develop speed, strength, skills and stamina.

The speed and incline can be adjusted for particular purposes.

Very useful for people who cannot, for some reason, take their dogs out in the dark (various hazards), who are ill themselves and cannot walk as far as they did temporarily etc.

So a treadmill if used wisely, like ALL exercise equipment, has its place.

We had one for us in our home gym (summerhouse) and I tried the dogs on it. They didn't mind it. As the home gym was being rather underused (ie not at all) we eventually sold it on e-bay and now have a lovely comfy chair in there instead!
