Book recommendation: First time owners getting a 2 year old.

Hi,
I ask this question not because I can't find anything, but more that there are soooo many!

We will be first time dog owners, in about 1 month's time and I want a book to read up on basics - not breed specific (as there are very few PWD books anyway - and they are old too). The sort of thing that will help us avoid common pitfalls that might not even occur to first time owners. Preferably using modern techniques.

I don't want puppy books really, as he's 2 years old.

Any recommendations appreciated.

Thanks,
David

If you buy nothing else:

The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson
Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor

After hearing it recommended so many times, I finally got q copy of The Culture Clash to read, and I've never enjoyed a dog training book so much Start with that and you'll not put a foot wrong on your desire for modern, positive dog training.

LOL - am just re-reading The Culture Clash for the third time. It is the best book on dog training/dogs I have ever read.

Highly recommend it (I found out about it on this site)

Along with the Culture Clash, how about The Rescue Dog by Gwen Bailey? (since it`s an older dog you`ll need to retrain I expect?)

Nice one, that is the kind of other angle I wanted (with him not being a puppy), but with us still being new owners.

I'll wait to see any other suggestions before making my final order.

Does Dogsey have a referral link to any (so that Dogsey gets some commission type stuff?

Thanks again,
David

Well I've been doing some reading.

The Rescue Dog by Gwen Bailey
I read this first, last week. Very helpful in telling us what to expect in taking a dog from a previous home and owner to a new one, and how to overcome many of those challenges. Seemed to be based around pack leader theory.

The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson
Taking a little getting used to after reading the previous book. I found it hard going to start with, and still not the easiest to read, but I'm getting there.

Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor
Haven't had chance to read yet, sat waiting on the bookshelf!

We get our boy next Wednesday, I'm hoping to have finished The Culture Clash by then.

That`s good. I hope it all goes well. And I`m glad you`ve learned to compare the theories! As you have discovered - there are a lot of different viewpoints with dog training.
