Are you lucky?

I see so many dog owners and their dogs and some know their dogs well, others haven't got a clue (usually the case with all things) but then when I see some bad behaviours being exhibted (bear with me on spelling - no google chrome) I look at my own dogs and think, I was lucky!

Sadie - BC x JRT, not a concoction I would have thought worked well, collie and terrier - could've been majorly worse! But although she isn't an obedience dog and wouldn't really excel in the training class Louie is in (she's a sweetheart but quite limited ) I cou;dn't have wished a better dog to have introduced me to the world of them. I am also lucky that she is such a well behaved dog naturally - not just taught but they are just there.

Louie - ESS x Lab (working lines) well, I lose count of the many times I hear "oh he must be mad" "Oh I bet he's a handful" but yes he's hard work, yes I have to work harder and yes we're limited to where we can go and what we can do (atm) but he's growing up nicely, he's maturing well and I'm lucky that he's not the crazy dog I could've ended up with..

Has anyone else felt lucky with their dog - compared to other peoples?

Oh yes most defiantly, I have Freya a Presa Canario she is fab she is still a puppy and is still learning but so far so good. She has grasped the basics of sit, stay, lay, no, give, fetch, down and leave and she is just 17 weeks old now socialisation is going well too. My brother has 2 Pomeranians and my mum has a Husky x Malamute and so far so good with all of them. She doesn’t seem too interested in other dogs though even if there all barking and yappy at her (to be honest is as though she’s a bit snooty just sticks her nose in the air and lets them get on with it) I do have to encourage her to socialise or she would prefer just to curl up at your feet or keep ignoring the other dog wich seems to be frustrating for some of them.

I feel very lucky with my 3 especially since they're all rescues they could've turned out so much worse All of them have their 'ways' but are basically well behaved considering I have limited background info on them.

Kiara loves to empty the bin all over the floor and trashes the house when she's unhappy
Poppy has all the tenacity of a terrier and very selective hearing
And Bailey well I feel extremely lucky to have Bailey even with the problems I've got/had with him I believe they are a product of his blindness and had he had full sight the DA issues probably wouldn't have risen. He's taught me so much about - well just getting on with things really he never lets his disability get him down, he lives every moment to the max and gets such joy out of the simple things in life that some days I could just cry for him Like when he feels his tail moving and wags it to try and figure out where it is before trying to catch it then falls over as he's concentrating so hard on his tail he forgets the rest of himself
Yes all 3 have their quirks but that's what makes them the loveable rogues they are!!

What sort of bad behaviours? Apparently I'm lucky because my dog doesn't pull on leash, is house trained, doesn't jump up, doesn't bark non stop, doesn't mouth people, doesn't hump people, can follow commands etc. None of which has anything to do with luck and everything to do with training and consistency.

I do feel lucky in that he doesn't suffer from seperation anxiety, isn't bothered by fireworks, has no major health issues etc though.

I also feel lucky to have him. Rupe might have his issues but the good outweighs the bad by a mile. He has personality by the truck load and seems able to win people over and convince them that he's awesome simply by being his silly self. He's also taught me a hell of a lot about patience, gentler training methods, dog behaviour etc.

With mine its training I think they are the lucky ones TBH that they have a owner that does, they could be thought of as mental cases if they we're not trained

I know the one thing I think is lucky.....mine don't bother with other dogs when out, suits me down to the ground

I couldn't agree more

A couple of mine arrived with issues, they don't have them anymore. The two fosters I had recently had a multitude of issues created by their previous owners, it's amazing how a bit of structure and training with consistant boundaries can turn a dog around. They've both moved on to homes that will continue with the rules I put in place and will no doubt continue to improve.

I think you make your own luck.

Mine don't either and I always assumed it is because they are self-contained as a pack and just don't need any other dogs in their lives!

I consider myself lucky because I have the best dogs in the world!

I do consider myself lucky, two adolescent springers, first time dog owners etc, i think we have been incredibly lucky with our two, they are not perfect but certainly much better than some.

Do i put this down to luck, yes some things, but other things i do put down to training, consistency, time and effort, and with one friend in particular it is the lack of training, time, consistency and effort that has stopped her having the dog she thought came wrapped in a ribbon in a box!
