Good Citizens Dog Scheme Class

I don't know much about dog shows and some of the different classes confuse me What does the good citizen dog scheme class at Crufts mean? What qualifies you to enter it? Just curious. Thanks.

There is a scheme called the Good Citizens scheme run by affiliated obedience clubs for the Kennel Club where all dogs & their owners can show they have control over their dogs but not the rigid obedience you see in the obedience ring. There is a puppy course & then three levels for other dogs Bronze, Silver & Gold. If your dog has passed the bronze level & got their certificate they can enter in that class at Crufts providing they have entered another class by qualifying for that. The first test involves walking without pulling, walking past other dogs without lunging, a simple stay, a recall from play, allowing the vet to examine the dog, going through a gate or door in a controlled manner & the owner answering quesions on dog welfare.

Thanks. Can you choose which class to enter? If you had an older dog could you choose whether to enter this class or veteran?

You can enter both!

You could have a dog that is eligible to enter several classes, for example my older dog is eligible to enter:

Open Bitch
Special Working Gundog Bitch
Veteran Bitch
Good Citizen Bitch

My male is eligible to enter:

Open Dog
Working Trial Dog
Good Citizen Dog

You can enter none, one or all as LONG as your dog meets the criteria for each.

Yes you can but most people enter it as a second class. In my breed I've only ever seen it entered as a second class but checking my catalogue in some breeds they enter as a new dog in the Good Cits class
