Importing dogs

Who has imported a dog? What is the process with quarantine and/or the pet passport scheme? How long does the process take and what are the rough costs of importing a puppy or a dog from either Europe or the USA/Canada?

Hi Kirsty, it's definately a lot easier if importing from the EU because there is no quarantine but the dog must still have a pet passport, still need rabies vaccination, still need a letter from the countries central veterninary laboritory to say the jab has worked, and still need to wait six months before import.

It's all explained on the DEFRA web siteif you go there. We paid about £30 for the 'letter' for each of ours plus the cost of the rabies inocculation and the others required. HTH

It might be worth getting in touch with the European Rescues who transport dogs to the UK. GAR use volunteer drivers to transport dogs across, using ferries, which is the cheapest option. The dogs do their quarantine in the shelter.

The price of my dogs included the cost of keeping them until 11mth, x-ray prelims, costs relating to passport
I had mine driven over by Pet Chauffeurs they used the Euro Train to cut back on time although it still took over 14 hours, cost deposit cant remember without checking plus £600 on arrival Ididnt feel it was too dear considering there was 2 dogs and the distance.
