Springer Spaniels and mud pools

serious question here, i have told my better half that i will ask on here, i have had dogs all my life many and varied but this is my first springer and i think i know dogs and how they think in some ways but i cannot work out why he needs to lie down and almost wallow in every muddy puddle we see, it is not a problem at all but i just cannot see why, i can understand if it was at the end of a long walk and he needed to cool down but he will do it at the start of a walk, any ideas as to why?, my other 2 just look at him like he is nuts.
If this needs to go in the behaviour section then please move and sorry.

One of mine has always done that (lab/BCX) Any water will do, but the muddier the better! I've never really seen it as a cause for concern, other than the mess he can make of course. It's just something he enjoys doing

I think you`ll find it`s not just Springers...

I always assumed they lie in mud to cool down.

Zak (my sons Springer) has a nose for mud, any old dirty ditch will do so he is usually walked where there is a pond which is preferable to muddy ditches.
Surprisingly he seems to be 'self cleaning' and rarely looks dirty.

Etta 'self cleans'---on the sofa!

She gets dirtier than all the others with little or no effort.

I have a defective Spaniel, he doesn't seem to like water, although gets very muddy.

My Retriever x Sam used to lie in every puddle he could find, so did his mum.
