We've got a cheapy Tesco bagless hoover (works better than our old Dyson actually!
and every so often I take it apart to clean the filter. I usually just take it outside and use a soft bristle dog brush to brush out all the dirt from the filter, last time I washed it (accidentally, not realising it dismantled more than I'd dismantled it), the water and dirt made nice mud and clogged it up for a while until it dried out. A better quality hoover might be a bit less likely to do this though!
