Poem to my old dog (sad)

I think its Christmas approaching. I have lost so many I love at Christmas.. I keep looking to my old girl Selkie and know in my heart this is likely our last Christmas together. I needed to put how I feel in words somehow... I used to write a lot of poetry when I was younger. So I put pen to paper again for her...

Stay with me

I see death stalking you my angel,
When I watch you sleeping, so deep,
When I see you breathe so shallow,
Each time you wake and stretch with a whine
Or cannot get your back legs working in time,
I see death stalking you, he grins
And wrings his hands in glee.

But he cannot have you yet my angel.
We rise, though it takes longer,
We shine though it’s a little dimmer,
And we fight back the shadows together,
Run on the field and eat with gusto
And death for a while must hide.

But he doesn’t go far I know,
And sometimes I hear you sing to him,
I think perhaps you and he
are becoming closer friends than you and me.
But you cannot go with him yet my angel.
Rise with me one more day,
Shine with me one more night,
I need your light in the darkness
I could not bear to face the dark alone.

I see death stalking you my angel,
When I watch you sleeping, so deep,
When I see you breathe so shallow,
Each time you wake and stretch with a whine
Or cannot get your back legs working in time.
I see death stalking you, he grins
And wrings his hands in glee

And one day I know it will be him you run with
Not me.

A sad poem, some might say morbid even, but it does reflect reality, I remember when our beloved lab was in that position, I had to lift her into the car and out, and the approaching dread day worried me then even 'tho I was much younger and supposedly a 'macho' man.

You have a good style and maybe you will write a few more and post them on here (Happier ones maybe?)
