Can I avoid euthanasia?

My 5 month old Bernese Mountain Dog mix started dribbling 3 weeks ago, then could not urinate. We took him to the vet where they put a catheter in him. They did an ultrasound and found it was Cystis prostatitis and secondary cystitis. His bladder has crystals and calculi in it. This is a huge infection with cysts on the prostate and inflamation to the bladder. The vet said this is not seen in puppies and suggested that he has another condition that caused it. My husband disagrees, but I don't know what to believe. He is on 3 different antibiotics and still has a catheter to urinate after 4 days. We increased is fluids to flush his system. The vet said it is a lot to go through for a puppy and told us to consider euthanising him. The other option is to go to a specialist which we cannot afford. Do you agree with the vets suggestion? Is there any other options or ideas? Does anyone think the infection will go away with just the antibiotics?

One of the other might be able to give some advice. All I know is if he was one of mine I wouldn't give up just yet. He's only a baby, dogs can get through things you don't think possible. I would also take him to a different vet for there opinion.

I will keep my fingers crossed the anti B's work for him. sending healing thoughts his way.

I would get a second opinion, then make a decision.

Is your husband a vet ? If he isn't then I would definitely go to another vet for a second opinion & then to a specialist if needed-the cost shouldn't be an issue when a pet's life is in the balance. If you don't want to spend the money on the referral to a specialist & the GP vet can do no more then putting your puppy down is the only option sadly

Tell your vet that you want a referral to a specialist in genito-uriinary problems and a full set of investigations done.

I wouldnt consider euthenaising at this stage, unless the dog is obviously suffering.

I definitly agree with the advice from other members, I would definitly get a second opinion before making any other decisions.

I really hope your pup gets through this. Please do let us know.

Totally agree with everyone else, a 2nd opinion should be sought, poor little mite, only 5 months old Please don't give up on him until you've covered all the avenues you can manage.

In an ideal world that's true but you don't know katiemw's circumstances. She's mentioned she can't afford a specialist so I think it's a bit insensitive to have made that comment.
