would a training line help my large dog?

we have a large cross breed rescue dog. we have had him a few years now and he has over come many problems. he does not have a very good recall. we were going to start back at the basics with a whistle to teach him but should we use a training line. we were unsure if it would work as he is quite strong. i have also heard that you need to learn how to use one correctly.

also when we first got him he would bark at strangers and bark and lunge at dogs as he was not socialised properly. he will now walk calmly past dogs but watches them closely and ignores strangers. he has meet dogs off lead with no problem but does not like greeting dogs on lead espcially if he tries to walk away and they follow him. do you think a training line would work to help him with this to?
he can be quite rough when playing which some dogs dont like but he did make friends with a dog who was also quite rough when playing. he was fine with this dog on and off the lead.

Long training lines are very good I have always used one for my large dog.

It allows them to have freedom and if you see a situation coming that you need to take control of you can put your foot on the end and stop them and then leash them to their collar on their normal walking lead or just reel them in make them sit and wait till the situation has passed.

You should always make sure your dog is wearing a harness if using a long training line especially large breeds if it is attached to their collar and you stop them suddenly it can cause painful injury.

no the clip is on the side. there is a loose strip across the chest area which tightens when the dog pulls.

Just be aware if you have a large dog, one of the problems I found with a long line was that if I hadn't spotted a dog quickly enough and my boy saw him first the line allowed him to charge off quickly as sometimes I couldn't shorten it in time. The force created as the line became taut was enormous and I gave up using it after a particular occasion when I turned to speak to someone a fraction of a second before Boris saw a dog (turned out to be a bitch in season) and I was spun round like a doll and off my feet. I still have pains in my arm four months later! I'm sure it works for some people but it just wasn't right for me and I now stick with a normal lead.

The clip on the side would be fine.
