Freak accident at play - broken pelvis

My friend's 15 month old flatcoat was playing today with a big lab, and because he's a bit rough when he plays, not so much rough as overboistrous being only 15 months old, the lab either went for him, or jumped on him and they were running downhill at the time. The lab owner took her dog off him coz she could see he was getting aggressive with my friend's flatcoat, so she just came on home like she always does, put him in the car, he seemed fine. A couple of hours later she took him to the vets coz he seemed quiet and slightly lame. They didn't know what was wrong, so gave him some painkillers and sent her off home. A couple of hours later he was hyperventilating in a terrible state poor boy, so she rushed him back to the vets and they took x-rays.

She's just phoned me, she's out of her mind with worry coz they have diagnosed a broken pelvis!!! Although her vets is the same as mine a big animal hospital, they can't fix this, he's going to have to be taken to a specialist IF he can do something with it, so they're sending him the x-rays and she'll know tomorrow once he's seen them. He's in a lot of pain which they are monitoring and he's being kept in obviously, and they WERE going off on holiday with him tomorrow to a lovely big cottage in the West Country they have booked for next week, but that's now gone out the window!

All her previous dogs have died at an incredibly early age, with cancer, or some other fatal illnesses, and I'm terrified for her, that an injury such as this might cause him to go into shock or something before he can get seen to by that specialist. I know he's in the best place possible, but this is a really serious injury isn't it a broken pelvis! I wish there was something I could do for her, but all I can do is be at the end of the phone, she's at her wit's end poor thing. Lovely, lovely dog too and only 15 months old. He goes to gun-dog training, she's doing very well with him and she of course adores him, it's so very sad.

Dogs at play and it ends up a tragedy like this, quite unbelievable isn't it. She doesn't know if the dog actually "went" for him to tell him off, coz he is a bit ott, but then aren't they all these flatcoats, especially a youngster, or whether he jumped on him, or they just rolled down the hill together, she just can't remember!

I'm going to be very careful who I let Zena play with now, it's scared the pants off me hearing this! Thank goodness my 55 kg Georgie is so gentle when he plays with her, coz he could do her some damage if he fell on her!

Not a good day.

poor dog
one of my own dogs ,suffered spinal nerve damage from a freak accident playing with his rope ball, but he learnt to walk again and lived 8 more years happily, and a fellow nurses dog died of a pnemo thorax from bumping into his owner and he was a very fit goldie,so very scary
there are alot of factors to consider,(is he knuckling, and continent?but,a fractered pelvis isnt always as bad as it sounds,(its very very common in cats, you rarely operate)also he is young, his bones are soft so he should heal quicker, provided hes not overweight, please try not to panic just yet,i know its hard, they will know more when they have been to the specialist.

That's Awful!

I've done a little bit of googling and it seems that with a broken pelvis it's a case of several weeks bed rest in the hope that it'll all mend itself naturally, or surgery to reset or perhaps pin the bones if things are badly out of place.

Not much fun, and costly (if they aren't insured). But I get the impression that the prognosis is normally very good?
