Anyone got a geko?

Orrible lizard things. Stepdaughter no. 2 is living between mine & boyfriends but works long hours and nobody is looking after Gordon the flamin geko so she wants to bring it here for muggings to look after.
I hate crawley slimey things - she has told me he sleeps all day in his tank & will be no bother.
Also that he eats live crickets or grasshoppers (not sure which) at which point I nearly fainted! where am I supposed to keep the insects? and what if they escape! & how do I get them out - tweezers? also do I have to touch Gordon? I'm cringing at the thought!
maybe I could feed Gordon to the cat
If I agree I was thinking of putting him in the girl's bedroom - but then they might mess with him & he could escape.
can you tell I don't want him! I've suggested re-homing him, but she loves him! Sorry but I only like pets with fur. I won't even clean the fish tank!

Never kept a gecko but we had a toad once. It wasn't a normal garden toad before you think i'm weird!!

My parents went on hols to Thailand and when they got back dumped their bags down and we sat chatting about their hols. Mum went to get something from her back and screamed so we all went running and there was this green, yellow and black toad on the floor so Dad scooped it up and put it in the bath tub and arranged for RSPCA to take a look the next day.

Anyhow they said it wasn't poisonous and that they were occasionally sold in pet shops so my brother in law gave us his old lizard tank and we kept him as the RSPCA said he'd only go to a pet shop to be sold on anyway.

He used to be fed on live crickets, they come in a plastic box with half an egg carton in it and you just open it up a little bit and tip them out so don't really have to get anywhere near them.

The only downside is that the crickets are noisy sometimes but then so was the toad when he was calling for a mate!

He lived for about 5 or 6 years and a reptile specialist we spoke to said that was good innings as they normally only live half that but i expect thats due to predators more than life expectancy.

Anyway that digressed into a longer post than i expected! Don't worry about the crickets, they are easy to feed and you won't have to touch them!

Cringe - though he may have turned into a prince if you kissed him.
I haven't agreed yet - she keeps pestering me every day but I think she will just "turn up" with it.

Firstly they arent horrible, nor crawley or slimey. They need to be kept at a specific temperature or they will die. They can eat mealworms, Locust Hoppers, crickets etc... I keep mine in the shed in the warmer weather, crickets and Hoppers will die in the cold, Gecko wont eat them then. Tweezers are fine. I feed one at a time untill mine has lost interest, you should never leave uneaten food in with them.

Geckos are easy to handle, although I never handle mine unless necessary, dont hold their tail, it will fall off!! Most importantly is the temperature and vivarium you keep them in. They also need a "wet box" so they can shed their skin easily.

I has a gecko years ago, they are a easy lizard to keep.
Like dawn has said the temperature has to be stable, the tail will come off and re grow.
The diet is as dawn stated above, we used to keep live crickets, locust etc in a snall animal carry box and just give my lizard a few a day.
you can also get powder suppliments from the bets if they aren't getting enought vits etc.
Some of them like fruit and veg also, it depends on what they are used to.
I handled my boy every day, he used to sit on my hand watching the tv, you just need to monitor their temperature so if they are starting to feel cold, pop them in to warm up.
They can have difficulty in sheading i used to have a small piece of bark in mine as shlter and he used to rub on it to help loosen the skin, it tends to get stuck around their toes.
But don't be tempted to peel it if it is not ready to come off.
They can live a while as well, how old is it?

I've always wanted one of these, I find them fascinating and they don't scare me, they're definitely not slimey, they're quite dry, bug not huggable like the furbabies, but very cute. Just make sure you keep him out of Tilly's way coz, well, you know.... just in case I bet you end up quite liking him by the time he goes back home

Thanks for the info - you mean I have to touch it!!! though I'm more concerned about the wee beasties even with tweezers!
I may have to get someone else to do it - though I still haven't agreed he can come, maybe I can charge rent!

I had two leopard gekos years ago, they were my brothers, but he got bored of them so i took them on. I had a pair of those from him, as well as a pair of corn snakes, a rat snake, milk snake and an iguana! I love reptiles!

They are fascinating little creatures, so cute! I just love their beautiful eyes. If you're strange like me, you will find their hunting and eating fascinating, as long as you arent squeamish!
