On hold

I had the pleasure of been on hold while ringing up the company that has dug up our road last night. Was on for half an hour I had to listen to really bad opera (has anyone else heard of wing well it sounded like her!) on loop. They never answered I hung up had other things to do with my time. I rang back an hour later and got straight through.
My question is that is it true that once youve been on hold for over a certain amount of time that they will not answer your call as it makes the stats look bad?

Many companies have a "backdoor" system for their own employees to avoid the queue: this link is to a list of the relevant codes, although, unfortunately, the majority seem to be American.......
