How GREEN are you

after chatting to gas and electric company today to give correct meter readings as bills were estimated make me wonder how GREEN we all are ...was complemented today about how low my direct debits were for a home of 4

I do many things to help I never leave anything on standby ( uses 80% of power ) and energy saving light bulbs

on another note i recycle as much as i can bottle in the bottle bank and clothes iin the clothes bank .......i use washing up water ( have a dishwasher but it takes too long ) to water the garden ................

how green are you and what more should we be going ?

Think I am quite green:
I have a compost heap
I recycle my paper, plastics and cardboard.
i donate my old clothes, shoes, books and videos to Oxfam
I get e-bills for all my telephone/bank statements etc where I can.

I do use my dishwasher and washing machine alot but I always make sure I have a full load on.

I try not to leave lights on and we have energy savers in all the main rooms.

I try not to buy anything with too much packaging ( ie fruit & veg/meat etc)

and when the baby comes I hope to try and use cotton nappies where I can !!!! ( although depends on how disgusting my childs bottom is to be honest !!!)

We
recycle all the normal bits and pieces
take clothes to the clothing bank
re-use carrier bags
use a water butt
use energy saving lightbulbs
AND
recycled our dog ( he was a rescue )

The most un-green thing I do is use the car to drive to the woods each day to take him for his first walk which is nearly all off lead.
When he is older I will walk him there (sometimes)

Good thread! I was just thinking about this the other day.

Good things:
recycling paper, glass and metal
mending clothes (and most things actually!)
barely using the car, public transport here is good
vegetarian
buying things with minimal packaging
use ecofriendly cleaning products
composting
turning lights off and turning tap off while cleaning teeth

Bad things:
air-travel about once a year
bleaching the loo
lazy with recycling unless the council come to collect it
married to a standby junkie meat-eater
buy too much foreign produce

Aims:
get a water butt
buy electricity from renewables
and eventually fit a wind turbine to the roof and convert car to biodiesel

For those of you who've mentioned dishwashers, if you've got them you might as well use them, they're actually slightly more efficient than hand-washing If you haven't got one, don't get one, because they'd take a long time to compensate for the energy consumed in their manufacture

I think im quite green.I always switch lights off when leaving a room and every bulb is an energy saving type all bar kitchen which has low voltage halogen lights. My washing machine is AAA rated and my oven is AA rated, but my fridge/freezer though is not energy rated at all due to age.

All my garden waste goes into wheelie bin which gets composted then sold back to us gardeners.I recycle as much as i can with newspapers etc etc,but i try to avoid food which is un-necessarily packaged and buy meat/eggs from local farm shop where its sold in brown paper bags.I prefer to buy British goods and i still look forward to our particular seasons for fruits & vegetables.People nowadays are used to buying veggies etc from all round the world, but you cant beat homegrown stuff and cause its UK grown-its transportation has created far less pollution than say new potatoes from Egypt!

Im not particulary green where cleaning chemicals are concerned im afraid cause i do like to have a clean loo, sinks etc.
