So sorry to hear this, I had hoped for a better outcome for you

Personally I always let the surviving dogs inspect the body. I believe it helps them to understand, although as with us, they may still miss their friend afterwards.

However some times I think it is our grief and our disrupted behaviour that throws them, as much as their own sense of loss.

I have known the occasional dog revel in suddenly getting all that extra attention.

As for afterwards you can have an individual cremation and have her ashes back to keep, bury or scatter, which can be easier than burying a body as you need a suitably deep secure hole, not least to lessen the likelihood of any later interference or exhuming attempts from foxes, which can involve needing to put paving stones over and around it.

Alternatively you can have a general cremation when you don't get the ashes back, if you prefer to keep a collar or photo etc as a momento.

Your vet will be well used to dealing with the options and may be the best person to speak to about it.

I admire you for taking this decision for her, it can't be easy.

I am so sorry, wish you all the strength for today.... I would suggest to let Parker sniff her afterwards, I think they know then that they have gone. They normally do the same in the wild. I found that when we had to put down ( awful word ) Conan and the vet left him there for 5 minutes ( on his own with just us there ) the girls sniffed him and then walked away.. they seemed to have coped better with that then when one of my girls went to the vet and never came back..... they searched for weeks.... We also had them both cremated and buried the ashes in the garden. we made a ceremony of it and let the dogs sniff the ashes and collars as well... it was as if they understood. But every person is different and you have to do whatever you think is right for you and Parker.... Thinking of you and lots of hugs xx

Thinking of you today, it won't be easy but you know you have made the right decision. I admire you for that.

Thinking of you and your husband on this terribly sad day. I'm so very sorry but agree that you are preventing your girl from suffering and that is the most selfless act ever. xxxxx
