The original post was actually about people assuming that because i'm young i have just got a dog for Xmas and not for life and then evolved which was probably my fault for bringing up the beach story.

nothing wrong with not liking kids. i dont mind them as long as they're not near me or talking to me or looking at me and i cant hear or smell them.. i cant speak for mish but ive never wanted for love either, canine maybe but certainly not human. some people just dont gel with kids. having a 'life' is nothing to do with it, its just a different life from yours
sorry for going OT

Big difference between 'not liking' and feeling 'replused' by them. We were ALL children once. Yes there are plenty of children that are little brats - I blame the parents. But there are also plenty of wonderful, intelligent, kind children that truly are a joy to be around. To make a sweeping statement like being 'replused' by children of your own kind is just bizarre.

I've got no problem with kids or people with kids, I've got no problem with people who don't like dogs. If everyone was the same then life would be very boring.

There have been some very useful and thoughtful posts on this thread and it would be nice if they weren't clouded by arguing.
I'm with you on this! I'm just trying to put off doing the hoovering, this is much more interesting...

OK, smarty pants, I stand corrected, but in my defence I did say 'loosley'.

Of course I do admit that it's easy to say as I don't have children myself, but this is how I think I'd do it.
It is very easy to assume what you would do when you don't actually have children.

I do agree the best way of dealing with scary (in the child's view) situations is to jolly them along as though there is nothing to be worried about but you are assuming this child hasn't been *socialised* with dogs. I know a child that has been raised with dogs but who would still be worried by a large, unknown dog running at them!

I would say it is totally on topic ... the thread isn't about a child scaring another child.

Agreed! Being repulsed by children is rather worrying! Just remember children are the dog owners of the future

With regards to this I would like to say...

I would find it very presumptuous of someone (esp a stranger!! ) to say that to me. It's very cheeky of some to automatically assume you need 'educated' that way!
