How safe is garlic?

Hi, just downloaded a treat recipe booklet from another post on DW and, whilst I am grateful for this, the first couple of recipes I looked at contained garlic. Is it OK to feed garlic to dogs?

The reason I ask is, before we got Paddy, we looked into all sorts of things - one being what not to feed your dog. I have a word document which quotes the following:-
Onions and garlic - both contain the toxic chemical called "thiosulphate" (more in onions than garlic). Dogs who eat a large quantity of these items suffer a condition where their blood cells burst, with death occurring within 36-48 hours of consumption. Keep that pizza or garlic bread to yourself.
Whilst I notice it does say "large quantities", it puts these in the same category as chocolate and macadamia nuts - stating all can have serious consequences for your dog. Hence we avoid giving Pads anything with garlic.

Just had a quick search and see that quite a lot of people recommend it. I'm confused

PS Anybody who would like to see what they think of the full document, please feel free to PM.

The keywords are "large quantities". Small amounts in cooking, or raw, are unlikely to harm and may be beneficial

Well I use liver and Garlic Treats for training. Usually Garlic Paste but if I dont have any a very tiny bit chopped up finely and cooked is OK. Moderate is the word.

Like S/B says, *in large quantities* are the key words. I give garlic to my dogs

Your dog should be fine if you give garlic more as a flavouring than anything else, i.e. in moderation

Garlic in moderation is ok and is known to be good at keeping away fleas and worms. As long as you don't go over the top i'm sure your dog will be fine. My dogs have the occasional bit of garlic bread when I make it and its done them no harm.

I prefer to play it 100% safe - no garlic, no onions, no chocolate, and, in Snorri-dog's case, nothing with salt (e.g. no crisps!) - and, being as fair as possible, Kali doesn't get salty things, either.

(Snorri-dog doesn't get salty things because he is epileptic, and there's thought to be a link between salt and epileptic fits.)

They do get leftover rice, if we've had a curry - it may contain traces of salt, but not nearly as much as crisps do.

There may be benefits to be had from giving small amounts of garlic, but I don't think my Boys need them - they are rudely healthy without it! So why take the risk, however small it may be?

Snorri
