Sorry to the the news about Jess.
Hopefully the x.rays will be better than you are expecting i really hope they are.
I think several others on here have had this problem with their dogs and they have after an op and rest recovered well.
If its any consolation Ollie and I met an elderly dog the other day and he was skipping about and apparently he will try to hump anything that stands still long enough he is 14.The woman told me he has had two cruciate ligaments done during his lifetime.
(((Hugs))) to you all and fingers crossed from me and Ollie.xx

Hi Shiba.

As Eunice says, I've been through this (or rather my dog Hoki has).

Like Nursey, my gut reaction from what you have said is that it isn't a ligament - or if it is, it isn't fully ruptured, though perhaps a slight tear. Usually when its a full rupture, as Nursey says, they can't put the foot down at all.

If it is the cruciate ligament, there are basically two types of operation you can have. The more traditional and less expensive of the options is a replacement synthetic ligament. The other, more modern (and reportedly better) option is TPLO where they make changes to the actual joint.
The TPLO surgery is much more expensive - it requires a specialist and is likely to cost you upwards of £1,500.
If your dog is insured, I would go for this option because (1) the recovery time is supposed to be quicker (2) the success rate is reportedly better.

Having said that, my rescue dog wasn't insured. I would have paid whatever was necessary but weighing up my vet's success (90%) against the specialist (99%), I felt that it was worth a shot with my vet.
Of course, Newfies are big dogs and that may also be a consideration which your vet will no doubt discuss with you.

Fingers crosseds that it isn't her ligament, but don't dispair if it is, several of us on here have dogs which have had ligament ops and come out the other side and we'll all help you through it
